International student health insurance Romania

Which student health insurance is required for Romania student visa ?

Health insurance in Romania is mandatory during the whole duration of studies.

Non EU/EEA nationals (third country nationals)

Third country students are those whose nationality is not one of the European Union or European Economic Area countries.

Students under 26 years old

Students under 26 years old and who are not employed can get free state-hospital care. However private international health insurance is highly recommended to purchase prior to arrival in Romania to have all necessary covers and to get the Romanian student visa.

Students over 26 years old

Students over 26 years old need to purchase the National Health Insurance House (CNAS) to access the free state-hospital care. However private international health insurance is highly recommended to purchase prior arrival in Romania to have all necessary covers and to get the Romanian student visa.

Highly recommended insurance : An international student health and assistance plan is necessary and highly recommended by all universities :

  • for obtaining the travel visa to Romania
  • for covering the medical costs until you are registered by the Romanian state hospital insurance
  • for taking in charge all assistance benefits necessary during your studies abroad
  • Repatriation to your home country
  • Ambulance by air, sea and ground
  • Search and rescue
  • Accidental death and disability benefits
  • Third party liability insurance

EU/EEA Nationals

Students with nationality from EU/EEA countries can request in their home country the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). Thanks to this card, EU/EEA nationals can benefit from the same cover as locals by the Romanian state hospital insurance.

Attention : The EHIC is not an alternative to travel insurance. It does not cover any travel protection, search and rescue, repatriation to the home country, emergency dental treatments, assistance… A private insurance is highly recommended in Romania also for EU/EEA nationals during the entire stay in Romania.
