Which student health insurance is required for Slovenia student visa ?

Health insurance in Slovenia is mandatory during the whole duration of studies.

Non EU/EEA nationals (third country nationals)

Students

Third countries students are those who’s nationality is non European Union or non European Economic Area country. 
 

International students from third countries may be included in compulsory health insurance in the Republic of Slovenia based on Article 15, Paragraph 14, of The Law on Health Care and Health Insurance, and under the condition:
 

1) That they have a valid certificate of enrolment at an educational institution in Slovenia or proof of training (basic or secondary school, faculty, postgraduate education, research work in an institution in Slovenia) and
 

2) Are not included in compulsory health insurance in EU Member States, EEA, Switzerland, Australia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro, or
 

3) Are included in compulsory health insurance but cannot receive the relevant documents for the exercise of emergency medical services in Slovenia, which they must demonstrate by relevant certificates.
 

Exchange students
 

International exchange students (not coming from EU, EEA, Switzerland, Austria, or countries with concluded bilateral agreements) must arrange their health insurance under the basis of insurance 43 themselves at the regional office of the Health Insurance Institute of Slovenia at the place of stay. As a rule, the health insurance becomes valid at the beginning of the academic year or training. The monthly contribution for this insurance currently amounts to €126.33 (which is 8.2% of the average gross earnings in Slovenia for October of the previous year). The student is the person liable to pay the contribution, although it can be also covered by a legal entity. Since compulsory health insurance covers only a certain percentage of the cost of health care services, we also recommend taking out commercial health insurance for the difference up to the full cost of medical services (Coris, Vzajemna, etc.). If the student does not have the additional insurance, he or she must pay the difference to the full price of the services.

Important for all students and exchange students : 
 

The Slovenia compulsory health insurance does not cover all medical benefits and not cover any travel and assistance benefits.
 

Universities therefore highly recommend third country students to purchase before arrival in Slovenia an international student health and assistance. 

• for obtaining the travel visa to Slovenia
• for covering the medical costs in supplement to the Slovenia compulsory health insurance
• for taking in charge all assistance benefits necessary during your studies abroad
• Repatriation to your home country
• Ambulance by air, sea and ground
• Search and rescue
• Accidental death and disability benefits
• Third party liability insurance

If the duration of study is more than 1 year, a 1 year international student health and assistance insurance can be purchased and renewed at the end of the annual period.
 

EU/EEA Nationals
 

Students with nationality from EU/EEA countries can request in their home country the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). Thanks this card, EU/EEA nationals can benefit of the same cover as locals by the Slovenia compulsory health insurance.
 

Attention : The EHIC is not an alternative to travel insurance. It does not cover any travel protection, search and rescue, repatriation to the home country, emergency dental treatments, assistance… A private insurance is highly recommended in Slovenia also for EU/EEA nationals during the entire stay in Slovenia.
